“As a way to launch us into a creative autumn term, we were given the opportunity to spend a day sculpting an object of our own choice from close observation in Beatrice Hoffman’s sunlit conservatory studio in rural Oxfordshire.
Using her wide experience of the journey from idea to created object and her outstanding insight into the psychological and emotional process of discovering how clay behaves, Beatrice kindly encouraged me to learn from my mistakes and experiment to sculpt a clay head.
Seamlessly, as we worked, she drew well-observed comparisons between our learning experiences and those of the children we teach. Skilfully, she included practical suggestions for translating our learning into teaching clay sculpture in the primary classroom.
I finished the day exhilarated after challenging some of my thinking habits and relishing a tangible sense of achievement, having progressed from nebulous concept to finished object. I felt inspired by better teaching than I had ever experienced at school, even studying A-Level Art.
On the way back to school we shared ways we might give children at Blewbury School the chance to experience the same absorption which had gradually enthralled each of us, bringing silence to the studio.
I would strongly recommend Beatrice Hoffman’s Clay Sculpture day workshop to teachers. It was a thoroughly rewarding experience; as a means to rekindle confidence working with clay in the classroom or to ignite sculpting creativity for the first time, and as a powerful team-building activity. “Beatrice came to Welcombe Hills school for 4 full day sessions in February/March 2010. We are a special needs school with pupils with moderate to severe learning disabilities.
Beatrice worked with pupils in Key stages 3 and 4 in small groups. She worked with them to produce sculptures of animals and sculptures of human heads.
She showed a consistently calm approach with all the pupils throughout her time with them. She was able to engage them and inspire them. Throughout her time her she worked with enthusiasm with each and every pupil.
As an art therapist she was able to offer insight into individual pupils, which has proved to be invaluable.

Statement in Support of Ceramic Sculpture for Autistic Students
“As a teacher I accompanied a Key Stage 4, Year 10, group of students from a special school to Ms Hoffman’s ceramic sculpture sessions. I was familiar with the students and their specific challenges, and I was impressed with their application to the task of creating an animal sculpture. Ms Hoffman provided toy models and pictures of various animals from which the students could choose, or they were able to suggest their own.
This tactile experience proved to be extremely beneficial for all students, from those working virtually independently to those requiring a great deal of support and encouragement.
One ASD student in particular was a perfectionist with a meticulous approach. The patience and perseverance he displayed when creating a sculpture of an eagle independently was admirable. His keen eye for detail resulted in an excellent finished product, of which he was understandably extremely proud.
Adversely, another ASD student found this task extremely challenging. He required a great deal of support and encouragement. His confidence developed week by week as he saw his sculpture of a cat emerge from lumps of clay.
Both students, and the others, benefitted greatly from the knowledge and skills gained throughout the whole process. Their knowledge of shape and form, skeletal structure, etc, was extended through powers of observation being developed.
Fine motor skills were constantly a necessary requirement, when students were using a variety of tools. There were always opportunities for discussion and self-evaluation.
The satisfaction and sense of achievement displayed by all students was extremely pleasing to witness.
This was definitely a worthwhile, successful unit of study.”
