Small Bronze Figure Sculptures

With my small figurative bronze sculptures, I use different styles varying from :

  • realistic or naturalistic;
  • Cubist or planar, emphasising volumes ( “Determined, “Angel”, “Squatting 2”)
  • highly simplified (“Woman Arms Apart”)
  • abstract-linear (“Stretched Forwards”,”Sitting”,”Squatting 3”, “Dancing”, “Waiting”, “Coming Together , Dancing Apart” );
  • And very abstract (“You cant Catch me”)
  • Very compact and solid due to stone carving process

This is due to a lifetime of sculpting and the different forms of expression I experimented with during three and half decades; but it is also due to the variety of feelings I want to convey.

With my naturalistic figures, I seek an earthy, affectionate expression, describing everyday body shapes in natural movements or postures. Many of my figures are ample, and don’t follow diets to appear fashionably slim; they are not idealised, “classical” figures. They are often sensuous.

Feelings and sensations I describe are for instance:

  • “A state of being”, or restfulness – sedentary figures, expressing pure awareness and sensation, rather than action ( “Squatting 1 & 2 & 3”; “Sitting”, “Lying” “On Haunches” )
  • Yearning (“Singing”, “Sitting”, “Waiting”), a tension between where one is, and where one would like to be
  • Strength, standing one’s ground (“Woman Arms Apart”, “Against the Wind”, “Smallest Woman”)
  • Resistance (“Holding Onto Yourself”, “Determined”)
  • Movement, dynamism (“Dancing”, “Tumbling 1& 2& 3”, “Angel”)

With few exceptions, all of my figures are female. Being female myself, this preference derives from a position of empathy and identification, rather than a “male gaze” objectifying female bodies.

Some of the small figures serve as maquettes (= clay sketches) for larger figures more suitable for the garden ”Small Embrace”, “Couple Side by Side”, “Sitting”, “Squatting 2/2” ); many problems of a particular sculpture can be worked on a small scale. Once enlarged, some adaptations still have to be made to fit  better the changed scale of the work.

Squatting 2 (2 ) 2024

Another version of “Squatting 1” - this time more filled out and rounded in the thighs and lower legs, contrasted with the angular flatness of the arms and head.

Couple Side By Side ( 2) 2024

2026-09-28T18:34:30+00:00

This sculpture of a man and woman standing side by side expresses the strength derived from each other when facing life together. Rather than being tenderly involved with each other, we see these people facing life square on, helping each through life’s hurdles and challenges, trusting, and being able to rely on each other .

Sitting 2024

2026-09-28T18:34:31+00:00

This abstract sculpture was a re-making of “Abstract wave 2” , this time with thicker, especially sharper and more defined edges, which gives the from a more substantial and tense feeling.

Stretched Forward 2, 2020

2026-09-28T18:34:31+00:00

With this elegant figurative sculpture, I focused not only on the the female form, but more so on the remaining oval or heart-shaped space trapped between her lap, thigh and her bent-over body.

Huddling 2006

2026-09-28T18:34:31+00:00

A bronze figure sculpture depicting tender love, the kind of embrace you offer and receive when you seek comfort, reassurance and protection from the world by huddling together. This man and woman know and, trust each other well, they are at ease and have noting to hide from each other.

Ecstatic or Exasperated, 1997

2026-09-28T18:34:32+00:00

The posture of this bronze figurative sculpture describes the particular moment of surrender; either ground down from frustration, with personal will and resistance eroded, or from spiritual enlightenment. The effect and end result is the same: one lets something larger than oneself take over control and responsibility - there is openness, the gaze raised upwards towards God(s), space, heaven…

Woman Arms Apart, 2009

2026-09-28T18:34:32+00:00

This bronze figurative sculpture represents a primeval woman. She is well rooted with her short legs to the ground - she cannot easily be displaced. Two streams of energies flow through her: downwards through her arms and hands, connecting her with the earth and back- and upwards through her hair, connecting with the space around her!

Against the Wind 1997

2026-09-28T18:34:32+00:00

With this figurative bronze sculpture I focus on one simple posture: straining against the wind, with both the upper forward-bent body and her hair diagonally blown back.

Dancing 1998

2026-09-28T18:34:32+00:00

This figurative bronze sculpture contrasts the hard edges of a cubist style with round volumes, uniting loosely representational with an abstract style.

You Can’t Catch me 2006

2026-09-28T18:34:35+00:00

This highly abstracted figurative sculpture is loosely based on a very joyous, free sculpture Pablo Picasso created out of b endable sheet metal. I made it out of clay, fired and coloured with spray paints, finished off with shoe polish  and wax.I was associating along the lines of the “gingerbread man”, whose main achievement in the story I remembered was his ability to get away from people and things, and miraculously come back to life over many occasions -  a Houndini made from flour! The resulting sculpture seems valence while in perpetual motion, all-embracing with his arms, mid-motion running , with one leg in the air, one firmly planted on the ground. Three puzzle-like negative shapes  (= air-shapes  trapped between parts of the sculpture) offer a cohesive form that “holds it all together” in this sculpture .

Coming Together, Dancing Apart 2004

2026-09-28T18:34:35+00:00

Originally carved from one block of Ancaster lime stone, and later on cast in bronze resin, the sculpture shows and uses expressively the cramped and compressed nature of the medium of stone. As the sculpture is apprehended by walking around it , one will discover the changing , and ambivalence of that close encounter between man and woman: form one side the woman appears protective , and from the other side she looks slightly taken aback ; while the man appears from that same view like a child ( a very large head proportionally), and very much the initiator and the demanding one. The themes are equally sculptural as emotional: strength, support and holding versus flying and levity - gravity and its defiance. The figures are interdependent:they need each other, are mutually self-defining, and experience their identity through one another.

Squatting 1 1995

2026-09-28T18:34:38+00:00

With this figurative bronze sculpture I present the very simplified image of a sitting woman, triangular in shape. The body fits into a square block , inspired by Egyptian granite sculptures of scribes.

Squatting 2 1995

2026-09-28T18:34:38+00:00

Another version of “Squatting 1” - this time more filled out and rounded in the thighs and lower legs, contrasted with the angular flatness of the arms and head.

Squatting 3, 2010

2026-09-28T18:34:38+00:00

With this bronze sculpture I explored a figure less solid than my usual sculptures - with three air spaces trapped between between arms, legs and body.

Family Group 2005

2026-09-28T18:34:38+00:00

I created this figurative bronze sculpture when the TV news were full of refugee stories - in this case Albanians fleeing their homes from the Serbians.

Tumbling 1 (somersault) 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

Holding onto one’s body, as if it was a bundle that might fall apart, this bronze sculpture of a figure is readying itself for continuing its movement backwards, across its neck and head. A figure and sculpture only just in balance, it is caught in mid-motion.

Tumbling 1+2+3, 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

With all of my three small figurative sculptures entitled “Tumbling” I set my intention to fix three fleeting moments within one succession of movements, that probably in real life would escape one’s notice because of its speed. On an emotional level, I wanted to focus on a natural movement, in which one looses momentarily control . One might possibly feel helpless, or alternatively be filled with a pleasurable sense of dizziness, and certainly a loss of the habitual upright perspective on life. One is thrown into life , caught in movement - rather than standing ( or sitting) above it . To me, it appears that falling is diametrically opposed to standing : it looks more spontaneous, unintended, possibly undignified and un-heroic.

Dancing Forward 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

This small figurative bronze sculpture gives form to rhythm. The left leg in the process of lifting, the right leg taking the body’s weight, the figure is caught mid-movement. Her bent and short legs make her seem more grounded, all the closer to the earth she pounds with her feet; her head, however, is striving upwards.

Singing 1995

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

With this bronze figure sculpture, I reduced most anatomical detail to concentrate only on what is essential to this pose: the feeling in her belly is strong, as her protective hands indicate - and it needs to move up through her body, and be expressed though singing and her open mouth!

On Haunches 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

Another version of my earthy, strong women taking up “natural “ poses, with slightly flattened planes, inspired by African carvings.

Lying 1995

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

This figurative bronze sculpture was originally inspired by a small neolithic clay sculpture from Malta , “the Sleeping Lady” - a culture where women seemed to be leaders within their society , in their role of advising priestesses.

Smallest Woman 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:39+00:00

An image of intensity and energy, contained in a very small format. The soft meandering downward outlines I contrasted with the pointed shape of the left ( only) arm; the broadly apart legs confidently planted on the ground , with the head angled upwards, tense and aspiring.

Waiting 2008

2026-09-28T18:34:40+00:00

Slumped , upward looking head is a public commission with the brief of a welcoming , affectionate sculpture beside a hospital entrance, reflecting the care and dedication that goes on inside, and adding warmth and human drama to what may otherwise feel like a forbidding institution.

Holding onto yourself

2026-09-28T18:34:40+00:00

Cast in Bronze Resin, but originally carved in stone, this figure is compact and lacking space as though still encased in that most solid and intransigent of materials. Carved at a time of difficult personal circumstances, this sculpture embodies feelings of threat and anxiety.

Determined, 2003

2026-09-28T18:34:42+00:00

This is a powerful ceramic figure in cubist style .S/He is all “wrapped up with himself” in a defensive posture, holding his arm in front of his face, clinging to his own shoulder.
