Very Large Bronze Sculptures

My very large sculptures range in size from 160 to 230cm tall and have been created from various materials, with one of them cast in bronze.

“Adam” was carved from stone shortly after leaving art school as a practice piece to improve my carving skills. However, I consider it an early failure as I encountered problems I could not solve at the time, such as carving his fingers without shattering them and dealing with the challenge of only having one chance when carving stone.

“Surging Up”, “Big Claw”, and “Large Abstract Wave” are abstract forms carved and glued together from polystyrene pieces with an internal steel armature holding the sculpture together. Expandable foam was added to bulk out the sculpture, followed by a layer of plaster that was built upon and sanded to create the shape. The sculptures were then painted in blue with diluted acrylics.

Two of these sculptures were enlargements from previous smaller ones, while Surging Up had no precursor to follow.

All three were created during a yearlong, part-time Artist in Residency at Chenderit High School near Banbury from 2013-2014. I used this time to learn how to create large-scale sculptures with the goal of applying for public sculptures.

In 2017, I was commissioned by Northampton Hospital to create a life-size bronze sculpture of two figures to adorn their main entrance. The sculpture was meant to be welcoming and affectionate, reflecting the care and dedication found within the hospital. Additionally, it aimed to raise awareness about organ donation and celebrate the donors for their life-giving gift. This project provided me with a wonderful opportunity to express human relations surrounding giving and receiving support.
